Small Issue with Blog Roll

On the left side of this blog is what is referred to as a Blog Roll and sometime over the weekend it disappeared. Not sure why or what happened however I am trying to get it back to it pre-weekend condition.

From the previous blog, this weekend is when I updated the connection so that one could use www.easeofblogging.com as the URL and perhaps something at that point caused it to crash. As luck would have it that is not one item I had backed up so have to rewrite it. You might keep in mind that a backup is a good thing.

Ease of Blogging Domain Name

I believe that in an earlier post I said that I had purchased the domain name “Ease of Blogging”. Since that was purchased at Godaddy I had to point the domain name to this blog. I accomplished that this morning however it may take 24 to 48 hours to process.

When the process is completed I can then publicize the blog at “easeofblogging.com” rather than “blogspot.easeofblogging.com”. It is actually easier for others as that is the more natural way of displaying your address and at the same time your blog is now on YOUR domain.

This whole process is actually easier if you buy your domain name through Blogger, they do all the background work for you and the total cost will be $10, the same as it was at Godaddy for me however I had to do all the work and it can get a little tricky.

Another advantage of purchasing your domain name at Blogger is that you will get a Google Apps Account for free at the same time.

The process to link the domain name to this blog took some time as I had to change a few things at Godaddy (CNAME & ANAME records) and then one thing at Blogger on the settings for my blog. You can find all the necessary information at Blogger by going to How do I use a custom domain on my blog?

My recommendation would be to let Blogger do it, much easier. I have a friend who says; “I like that word EASY”.

Eric Felten: Slatkin's Blog Too Far: How the Maestro Made Them Mad - WSJ.com

This is the perfect story of someone putting too much information into their blog. It is all right to be personal in your communication however remember it can be read by people you would not want to know some things. Employer's read blogs, future employer's as well as husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, and many others. Give them the Good Side, the Positive one. Being honest is one thing, being _____ is another. If you need someone to talk to, the whole world might not be the best option. I encourage you to follow the link and read the  story.

As for this conductor Bill Engvall would have said; "Here's your sign".

I Blog

2010-04-04 11.59.17 Why not a little frivolity and perhaps some vanity thrown in. Last week I thought it would be interesting to have my very own personal license plate and my wife agreed, so here it is. I couldn’t wait to put it on the car.

Picture taken with my Droid – got to give credit where credit is due.

MEDIAlternative: The futures of journalism | The Bloomington Alternative

Some Interesting information here. A look at both sides of the value of blogging as well as other discussion.

"During the Q&A session, EIU students asked some thoughtful questions about the current state of journalism and what, if anything, could be done to improve journalistic performance. It's tough to do justice to such questions in a few minutes. Nevertheless, I did my best to suggest that the Internet and related technologies provide some reasons to be optimistic about the future of journalism -- despite what naysayers in so-called legacy news organizations might say about blogging, social networking and emerging forms of journalism."

Thoughts On Blogging Startup

I have just finished reading a post regarding blogging tips to develop a unique position. I read it and then began to take issue with the wording of some of the tips (my prerogative). The article; “5 Blogging Tips for Developing a Unique Identity” and I am going to present my own slant on each of the tips. We all have our own view and this is mine.

Note: Perhaps my disagreement is more in semantics – it’s you decision. You can read the article and then read my response below and just read my feelings.

The first tip was Topic Selection after which was stated; “It is always good to select topics that have some sort of popularity with readers.” Personally it is always good to select topics that are close to my heart whether it be personal or business.

Blogging is one form of the ultimate niche market. I am not out here looking for a subject to start a blog on that you want to read that perhaps I have no interest in. I need to be into the subject, in the presence of it, and it must be meaningful to me first. That is the only way that I know what someone else interested in the same subject might want to read (or hear or see).

Second tip: Opinions offered. Now I agree with this one. You should have your own opinion that is what sets you apart. Not to be argumentive but to be able to express your feelings and thoughts and then through comments be able to hear and respond to others. Works for business as well as personal.

Blogging is a conversation and your blog is yours.

Third tip: Content quality. Well I might take issue here with the word’s; “…type of information that readers find intriguing, educational, humorous or useful.” If you do not find it intriguing, educational, humorous or useful don’t write about it. I repeat, if it isn’t you then don’t write it. This is your blog and you must feel that you are writing both for yourself as well as the reader. I am not saying to present an arrogant personality, there is always another view, however (again) this is your blog and your point of view.

Fourth tip: Timeliness of information: For the most part I will agree however there are times when it is worth repeating old news perhaps with a new slant. Bringing back a subject that perhaps did not get enough initial discussion and you have a reason to return to that well. Good, go for it. Dredge it back up however don’t just repeat old news, have something new to say. Don’t post just for the sake of posting.

If you heart isn’t into it take a break.

Last tip: Personality. I agree with the author here. “Everybody has a unique personality therefore use it to your advantage on your blog.” The author goes on to talk about humor, sarcasm, or tutorial delivery. Be yourself, write, talk and deliver who you are. Above all be comfortable with yourself and your presence.

Top 10 Free Small Business SEO Tools - www.smallbusinesscomputing.com

For anyone starting up a blog or a web site and would like to get your web presence known (be found by a search) this is a good read. There are a number of links and explanations regarding Search Engine Optimization or better known as SEO. In a recent Web Design and Usability Techniques class this was something discussed a little at the end.

I have a prior link here to Google's Webmaster Tools and that can also give you good insight as to what one needs to do.

I said in the original piece that the only real initial cost to blogging (specifically at Blogger) is time and reading should take up some of that. If necessary print it out.
